In today’s Urban Planner, a Scott Pilgrim signing session (and screening) to promote the upcoming DVD release, noted Torontonians impart great ideas at the MaRS district, Forest City Lovers and friends at the Horseshoe Tavern, and The Toronto Sketch Festival has showcases into the wee hours of tomorrow.
DISCUSSION: MaRS isn’t always an easy place to drop in and check out; as a cutting edge foundation for innovation in science and medicine, there are some very advanced ideas bandied about there. But the Treehouse Talks are programmed with laypersons in mind, with noted Toronto thinkers giving short lectures on collaborative innovation. This evening’s guest lecturers are Ana Serrano (director of the Canadian Film Centre’s Media Lab), Donna Francis (a programmer at the Ontario Science Centre, and a knitting enthusiast), and Darren O’Donnell (artistic director of Mammalian Diving Reflex). MaRS Discovery District (101 College Street), 6 p.m., FREE.
FILM: So Scott Pilgrim vs. The World didn’t take the North American box office by storm. We still love it, and it should do very well on DVD (which drops November 9). Well aware that Toronto’s the epicentre of Scott Pilgrim love, Universal Canada has arranged a signing at the HMV Superstore (333 Yonge Street) with creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, director Edgar Wright, and Scarborough’s Ellen Wong (“Knives Chau”), from noon to 3:30 p.m.. After that, head to the Bloor Cinema and get in line, because there’s a FREE screening and Q & A this evening (if you didn’t get passes via The Beguiling or Space, you’ll need to be among the first seventy-five fans at the signing, or the first couple hundred outside the cinema). Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor Street), 7 p.m., FREE.
COMEDY: We wrote about The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival on Tuesday, but tonight’s one of the strongest nights on the schedule. Not only are there several past winners performing (like The Riot and Haircut), but headliner Brian Galligan’s final Sassy Gay show is tonight, as is the midnight showcase of the hilarious Rap Battlezz. Various venues and times, $15 per show, four-show pass for $40, full festival pass for $60.
MUSIC: Forest City Lovers are headlining a stellar showcase of local music acts (and one visiting act, NYC’s Golden Ghost) at the ‘Shoe tonight. The dendrophiliacs are joined by Toronto favourites Hooded Fang (whose stellar new record is out now), and Allie Hughes (who thrilled as usual at last night’s Feint of Hart). The Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen Street West), doors at 9 p.m., Allie Hughes opens at 9:30 p.m., $10.
