Still from Denis Villeneuve’s officially Oscar-nominated Incendies courtesy of TIFF.

If you’re like us, and you set your alarm for 5:20 a.m. (Pacific Standard Time) this morning just so you could be parked in front of your computer, coffee and oatmeal in hand, in time for the live streaming announcement of the nominees that made the final cut for the 83rd Academy Awards, then you can probably skip this post. But if you just read that first sentence and thought, “There’s a 5:20 Pacific Standard Time in the morning now?” then pipe up and pipe up good. The nominees for the 2010 Oscars have been announced! And even better: there’s some local Toronto colour. Or at least colour tangentially Toronto-y enough that it warrants a post.
As far as Best Picture, all the usual suspects made the cut, from favourite of the Toronto Film Critics Association (and plenty of other critics) The Social Network to Black Swan, Toy Story 3, and TIFF audience favourite The King’s Speech. (Also, if you missed it, in the announcement run-up, Dave Karger from Entertainment Weekly referred to Black Swan and The Fighter as “art films.”)
Local boy Scott Pilgrim, of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World renown, made good with got totally passed over for a nod in the Best Visual Effects category. If there were any justice in the world, Pilgrim—which boasted some of the coolest effects shots ever—would have not just been nominated but taken the category. But because there’s not, Inception will win. Because, you know, in that movie buildings fold over and the kid from 3rd Rock drifts around in zero gravity and stuff. Recipient of both TIFF and the TFCA’s Best Canadian Feature accolades, Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies made the final cut for Best Foreign Language Film. It should lose to Dogtooth (again, in a just world) but will probably actually win (less just world) or get beaten out by a dark horse like Iñárritu’s Biutiful (least just world, and one that categorically precludes considerations like intelligence and taste).
In any event, you can peep the whole list here. The awards themselves will be dispensed on February 27. Ugly monsters Anne Hathaway and James Franco, who are disgusting and not great-looking, will host. In the meantime, set up that office Oscar pool and speculate below in the comments. Heck, it’s what the Internet’s for, ain’t it?

CORRECTION: January 25, 9:42 AM In a caffeine-deprived haze, we originally wrote that Scott Pilgrim had in fact been nominated, instead of just making the shortlist. Our apologies for the error, and to Pilgrim.
